YEAH man, im finally at staffroom again (: ohh yes this is the job i wanted :P slack teacher! ahaha, the PA job totally exhausted me, its not that its not fun, but its my first day, din know anyone, and all. but it was quite boring and tiring. shall try a few more events before decision (that is if the guy still want me there) haha..
okay, i want to blog about the event! haha..
saturday!
oh first i want to say my deepest apology to PA for pangseh-ing their lunch! sorry guys ): next time ill come.. its totally not worth pangsehing and i regretted it. haha, but whats done is done. shall have more outings to bond the small and cosy family (:
so saturday was my first day at work at showmakers - some company that provide sound light and image. i thot itll be preety similar to that of our njPA. but it turns out to be different. of course theres some similarity, but the working environment are totally different. no more having fun and joking around when doing event. scolding if something is wrong, and some people there are not friendly man. not friendly.
so yes, me and shihui met at city hall mrt to go to the venue, suntec convention centre hall 601 and 602. we came quite early and waited there for quite long. oh and funnily, she was wearing PA 06/07 shirt, and im wearing 07/08 shirt :p
then when we go in, they asked us to change to their shirt. its a black polo with some small logos at each side of the shirt. changed, and waited there for instruction (which was never given properly) im just like some small lost kid. they went to set-up the whole thing, i went to help here and there. it was a huge event, i mean, compared to nj ones. haha, and to setup the whole thing we took from 8am to 10pm. yes it is that long. serious.
im lazy to put in all the details, it was quite boring at times and quite tiring at times too! overall impression on first day, bad, i hope it gets better.
sunday was the actual event. it actually starts at 3pm but we came at 8am. so njPA dont complain if u need to come 1 hr earlier :p hahaha, yes, so there was soundcheck (which im not involved) and basically i also dont know what im doing. haha, taping here and there, helping them carry stuffs, hanging disco balls :p
so basically the setup was super cool and i cant wait to put it to use for njPA. here it goes.
32 input channels, 7 channels for a drum, 10 channels for wireless mics, several (i dont know the exact number) channels for DI boxes and mics for sax and trumpet, and some for cd player and also lighting input. yes and all goes into a junction board which split the signal into two, sending them to 2 separate mixers (or console as they call it) one backstage and one on the audience, (similar to jazznight) but the difference is BACKSTAGE is responsible for all the stage monitors! and FRONTSTAGE is responsible for audience! how cool is that!
haa, we never really care much about stage monitors, but it turns out to be extremely important! okay, lets count, 4 front monitors for singer, and 4+ monitors for the performers behind. 6 monitors (2 tweeters and 4 subwoofers) for sidefill. darn cool. haha. mixer backstage was yamaha, some really nice computerized mixer that can store and recall every settings on the fader (so after u safe, when you load, the fader will move itself to the position) cool.
frontstage, the 2 halls were super very long. i thought they will have another delayed speaker in the middle of the hall to support the sound for the audience behind, but turns out nothing. just a humongous 8 self powered speakers hanged on top of front stage, and another 6 on each different sides, and 4 on the ground. another 4 on top of the ground powered speakers, but they are just normal speakers (which confuse me because i cant seem to find the power amplifier for those speakers :S) basically it was ALOT. haha.
lighting! they have a large collection of pilots! its nice to see them altogether (not just a pathetic 4 pilots hanging on the top of LT 5 :p which one of them is still missing) let me recall. 8 pilots on stage, 8 pilots above stage. yes thats how many it is. lighting board was a board (not a computer) but it has an LCD and really complicated buttons and faders. the person man-ning the board was really pro at it. haha, controlled all 16 pilots at once. gobos all around the place. and it was really cool when the 4 pilots on stage were focused on the disco ball! haha. okay enough of the pilots. 28 pars. different colours on top of the stage. normal pars. (which shihui helped to tighten the screws and slot in the colour paper) let me see. what else. OH, 2 follow spot. of course manual one. each on one side of the audience. it was heavy. haha, i set it up! with another person of course. now my arms are aching.
image, okay image here means projection, and video. theirs is a projector screen that is bigger than our biggest one. haha, abit bigger. but same setup though, similar frame. and of course i can help in that too xD so we do the same straightening the joints, locking the joints and pulling the screen. cant to that alone, for sure. but the screens must be hanged very high, so they need to climb up and hand it there. i volunteered but the person scared i scared up there. haha, it was like 3 storeys height, and the structure is just a metal structure with no safety. in the end i just have to climb up on top to pass some things to the person on top.
okay i shall stop there. haha, i can still continue with the taping and covering backstage but thats not very important. i shall post some pics of the final result.
and this is the audience side mixer and lighting board, and there are some equalizers too! is really nice to see the sound engineers on each sides adjusting the equalizers. i want to know how too.
OKAY! done about the setup. next is the event. :p
at first i got no specific job. (shihui got to be the rightstage person that give and collect the mics from the performers, 5 wireless mics. in case u want to know, its shure, sm-58) so i got nothing to do until the lighting board man called me and ask me to control the houselight and haze machine. oh wells, not bad :p so he gave me a talkie. guess what? our old good motorola talkie! haha, but with working headset :p touchscreen control for the houselights! how cool is that? haha, here are some photos of me on the job :p
but of course i dont stay there troughout, mostly i was backstage. and only go to that room when concert is almost started, finished, or just before break.
that marks the end of the long pa post. and to say that i dont like the job is quite contradicting. xP haha, cos i love doing pa stuffs, maybe these things are still new to me. different environment, different crew, different working method. ahh, im in a dilemma.
okay done! nows other things.
what else. i also dont know what to write. oh i asked for permission to return early on sunday cos i got teaching today, and return early means? 12am. yes thats early. haha. i miss the times where 1130pm was my latest. xP
